The Home-School Connection

School is Where Your Brain is: The Home-School Connection

Tuesday, October 28th at 11:00am PT/2:00pm ET.

Historically, learning took place throughout all aspects of a child’s life. Maybe not traditionally, maybe it’s in the distant past with the advent of school, but many made an assumption that that is where learning takes place as opposed to outside of school. Increasingly we recognize that learning really takes place regardless of where a child is. However, our educational institutions have been challenged to recognize learning, in less formal environments.

In this show we’ll look at the connection between formal and informal learning and the relationship between the institution of school and other educational opportunities.

Michael Jay and ETT Guests will contemplate the following questions:

  1. What is the present day relationship between formal and informal learning for pre-K 12 students?
  2. What role do Badges and other methods of recognizing performance outside of school play in making institutional change?
  3. For those institutions that are pursuing personalized learning what strategies are they using to incorporate the whole child into that process?
  4. How can publishers accommodate and take advantage of these shifts (changes) in the home-school connection in their products and other offerings?

Guests at the table:

1. Sherry Hsi, Ph.D. – Research Director, Lawrence Hall of Science

2. Ashley Naranjo – Learning Initiatives Specialist, Smithsonian Institute

3. Rich Ponzio– Cooperative Extension Specialist at UC Davis
